What is naturopathic medicine?

 

Naturopathic medicine is a distinct primary health care profession, emphasizing prevention, treatment and optimal health through the use of therapeutic methods and substances which encourage the person's inherent self-healing process.

Naturopathic medicine is based upon six fundamental principles:

First Do No Harm - Utilize the most natural, least invasive and least toxic therapies.

The Healing Power of Nature - Trust in the body’s inherent wisdom to heal itself.

Identify and Treat the Causes - Look beyond the symptoms to the underlying cause.

Doctor as Teacher - Educate patients in the steps to achieving and maintaining health.

Treat the Whole Person -View the body as an integrated whole in all its physical and spiritual dimensions.

Prevention - Focus on overall health, wellness and disease prevention.

Naturopathic physicians are clinically trained primary care physicians who have graduated from a 4-year accredited naturopathic medical school. Training is received in the same biomedical and diagnostic sciences as conventional medicine in addition to other areas including clinical nutrition, traditional Chinese medicine, physical medicine and psychological counseling.

What can you expect at your initial visit?

 

During your initial 60 minute visit we will walk through your entire health history, discuss your key concerns and health goals, and complete a physical exam. A health care plan will be developed that may include lab work, imaging, dietary and supplement recommendations and additional treatment recommendations to help you achieve your health goals.
